FAQs for booking flights from the United States to New Zealand

  • Do I need a visa to visit New Zealand?

You won’t need a visa to enter New Zealand if you’re a US national and plan to stay for a duration of less than three months. Longer stays will require a visa.

  • Where should I fly to in New Zealand for easy access to the mountains?

New Zealand’s South Island is much more mountainous than the North Island, which is served by Auckland Airport. For access to the mountainous regions of New Zealand, your best bet is to fly internationally into Christchurch Airport, then rent a car and drive southwest to Mount Cook National Park or Mount Aspiring National Park.

  • Are there nonstop flights to New Zealand?

Flying to any destination in New Zealand will generally involve at least one stop from most areas in the United States. The only cities in the US from which you can fly nonstop to Auckland Airport include Los Angeles and Honolulu on flights operated by Air New Zealand and Hawaiian Airlines.

  • I want to visit the Fiordland National Park, where should I fly into?

Fiordland National Park is one of the most popular tourist destinations in all of New Zealand. The closest airport to Fiordland National Park is the Dunedin Airport, but this airport mostly receives domestic and nearby international air traffic. The most convenient way to get to the park is by flying into Christchurch, then either driving straight there or catching a short regional flight to Queenstown.

  • How does KAYAK find such low prices on flights from the United States to New Zealand?

KAYAK is a travel search engine. That means we look across the web to find the best prices we can find for our users. With over 2 billion flight queries processed yearly, we are able to display a variety of prices and options on flights from the United States to New Zealand.

  • How does KAYAK's flight Price Forecast tool help me choose the right time to buy my flight ticket from the United States to New Zealand?

KAYAK’s flight Price Forecast tool uses historical data to determine whether the price for a flight to New Zealand from the United States is likely to change within 7 days, so travelers know whether to wait or book now.

  • What is the Hacker Fare option on flights from the United States to New Zealand?

Hacker Fares allow you to combine one-way tickets in order to save you money over a traditional return ticket. You could then fly to New Zealand with an airline and back to the United States with another airline.

  • What is KAYAK's "flexible dates" feature and why should I care when looking for a flight from the United States to New Zealand?

Sometimes travel dates aren't set in stone. If your preferred travel dates have some wiggle room, flexible dates will show you all the options when flying to New Zealand from the United States up to 3 days before/after your preferred dates. You can then pick the flights that suit you best.

Top tips for finding a cheap flight out of the United States

  • When you’re booking your flight to New Zealand from the US, you’ll most likely be flying into Auckland, which is home to New Zealand’s largest international airport. There are a handful of other airports in New Zealand, but those airports mainly receive traffic from destinations in Japan, Singapore and Fiji.
  • The currency of New Zealand is the New Zealand Dollar, and exchanges can be made at all New Zealand Airports. If you’re traveling to Auckland, one of the most popular places to exchange money and get the best possible rate is the collection of money changers located on Queen Street in the city’s main business district.
  • Although most flights from the US to Christchurch will have at least one stop, booking your flight to New Zealand through this city instead of Auckland can give you better access to the North and South Islands of New Zealand, giving you more bang for your buck. Routes to Christchurch are available with Fiji Airways.
  • If you’ll be traveling to Australia after your time in New Zealand, you’ll have several options of airports to fly out of. Airports in New Zealand that operate flights to Australia include the Dunedin Airport (DUD), Queenstown Airport (ZQN) and Wellington Airport (WLG), giving you more options for conveniently traveling throughout the area.
  • After flying to New Zealand, getting around the country via public transportation can be extremely limiting on the areas you’re able to conveniently visit. There are many popular destinations that aren’t reachable by bus. For this reason, it can be extremely beneficial to rent a car in the airport of Auckland, for example, to get around during your stay.

Very good; seat made ready for bed after meal, a plus since one airline covered the seat at the start.

Entertainment was not good. Seems like liquor should’ve been advertised only beer and wine was even though I saw others getting liquor didn’t realize I could. And the food to me could’ve been a little bit.

Food choices perhaps not the best. Only offered beer and wine, when it appeared other liquor was available. Entertainment wasn’t so good.

They charged me over a $1000 dollars to bring two surfboard bags as check baggage. Inappropriate and I would avoid flying sgain

The experience on Fiji Airways was absolutely amazing. Streamlined. All staff was amazing. Pleasant. Friendly. Extremely helpful.

Business class Seats on the A350 from Nan to YVR were wonderful. The flight crew was okay but could do with better training. Toilets were clean but ran out of paper towels towards the end of the flight. The food/menu and the wine offered really needs considerable improvement. Dinner options were either Bolani, a beef sandwich (even this could be made much better), or paneer butter masala. Unfortunately, if you are not a fan of Fijian food, there isn’t much choice. Dessert was either turmeric ice cream or fruits but unfortunately, they were out of fruit! So the only option was turmeric ice cream. I’m not certain how many passengers like turmeric but I am not one of them. They need to cater to a more diverse group of people. Perhaps they need a new chef? The movies& tv shows were mostly older so I didn’t find that interesting either. It was however, fun to view the plane’s exterior cameras as we take off and land. The best thing about this flight are the business class seats.

Comfortable as one can get in Economy, food was very good, staff were super friendly & efficient.

Really liked the plane and business class seat. Food was ok but could be better. Service was very good.

Better connections, much better cabin crew, much cleaner cabin that Qantas, American and probably other carriers.

What has happened to your airline customer service? We have to pay extra for everything now, except water, coffee and pretzels. A 6 hour flight and pretzels are free? Baggage is fined/fee Pick a seat is fined/fee A better seat is for bed/fee A meal is fined/fee Baggage over 35 lbs is fined/fee **When did get shamed into being like Spirit or Frontier? I'm rather disappointed in you.

This flight was on time, a bit of turbulence but manageable. Quick "tail wind" flight so no beverages or snacks. Getting baggage is quick

The flights were on time and catching the connecting flight was a breeze. Next time I won't carry such a heavy carry-on without wheels!!

Extremely poor, 1st time this has happened though. Traveling during the holidays, didn’t receive an update that our flight was delayed 3hrs. Lost our place in Airport Spot Saver to go through crazy long line at TSA, gate change and then another hour delay (makes it 4hr delay for a 2 hr flight to Las Vegas), stayed on tarmac for almost 25mins after landing. So 6.5hrs from Seattle to LAs Vegas. Could have went to Cancun instead.

Seats were the least comfortable that I can remember ever having. Seat location just across from lavatory doors was not a good location to say the least. Wife has a back problem and to have a seat that is no adjustable for posture was torture for the three plus hour flight

I flew from San Francisco to Honolulu on Hawaiian Airlines. The flight was operated by Alaska Airlines. Everything was fantastic. On the return flight from Honolulu to San Francisco, boarding was chaotic. They called each boarding group 1 through 6 very quickly, and everyone just ran and got in a very long line. There was no enforcement of boarding groups. Carry-on rules were not followed, and by the time I boarded the plane, there was barely any overhead space. I was boarding group 4. The crew was very professional, and the Hawaiian Airlines terminal in Honolulu was beautiful. I wish the rest of Honolulu Airport looked like the Hawaiian Airlines Terminal.

The take off and landing were smooth as was the flight. The service was great. Bathroom was clean. Thank you

From my interactions with the Oakland airport staff through TSA through the gate agents to the flight crew on Hawaiian they were just so kind professional and helpful.. the only thing I would add would be the they need more help and TSA and on the Hawaiian airlines flight it would be so much nicer for them to play beautiful Hawaiian music on the way over there.. they didn't start playing it until right before we landed..

Would like to see more consideration of older people. I have issues with being on my feet and walking too far. You put me in the last seat on the plane. Way in the back. Other than that everything was vey good.

Portland reservationist required me to check bag… tho always been ok as carryon before this experience. She didn’t ask my name or destination, seat number; only looked at boarding pass. She then sent my bag to wrong destination: Idaho Falls instead of Bzn, Mt. I spent 1 hr in Bzn trying to get this straightened out and locating where my bag might be? The Bozeman customer service was great and figured out the error that occurred in Seattle. They were wonderful, filed a claim and located my bag. They also offered me compensation for my problem which was helpful. Missed my meds last nite and following morning. Hope this will be resolved later today. 🙁

Liked the non-stop option, can always use more leg room!

Wonderful Airlines…our American Airlines could learn from ANZ. From boarding to landing everyone was professional and gracious. Kiwi’s really are the nicest of all people! Thank you

Would have been nice to have decaf coffee as an option, and perhaps a scone

New Zealand crew were attentive. We were not informed that we needed transit document to pass through New Zealand. A checkin employee helped with this for which we were thankful.

Overall good. We had to transfer to Bradly terminal. We had requested wheelchair assistance. The bus that picked us up had to wait for other passengers. The wait was long. Then, at the Bradly terminal we had to wait an extended period of time for the wheel chair assistance. These delays caused tension at checked in and resulted in arriving at the gate as passengers were boarding.

The boarding process was less than ideal. While I liked being greeted with “Kia Ora”, the rest of the process was very average for business-class travel — queue, crowding, no clear separation between economy and business premier. The aircraft felt old, even though I believe it was only 6 years’ old. Travelling in Business Premier in Air New Zealand is like sitting in a glass bowl. One can see everyone, and everyone can see others. Very bad structuring of seats. If you have a choice, fly another airlines like Singapore Airlines for business — I had the option, but chose this flight due to it’s departure time. Regrettable decision. I had opted for Vegan food choice. Very poor food as well as service. It is as if the chefs preparing the meal have little idea what nutritious, healthy and filling plant-based food is. And the crew were totally uncoordinated. In the main dinner meal, the first thing I was served was a fruit bowl, and then followed by other items. No mention was made that the fruit bowl (served first) was the dessert! And then after my meal tray was cleared another steward (not the one who served the main meal) comes around asks me that now that I had had the would like the dessert. I said yes, please. He went off and comes back to tell me discreetly that I’ve already had my dessert! He also didn’t know what the dessert was — and I guess it was the fruit platter that was the first item I was served. I was traveling with partner, who had similar experience. For her, they just cleared her table without offering dessert. Extremely poor coordination. The area behind the seats was extremely dirty. I just happened to use the overhead light to try and locate something that had fallen, only to be horrified at the dust, crumbs and all kinds of other particles. The only good thing about the flight was that when it ended, our bags came very very quickly. But that I guess is more to do with airport operations for Air New Zealands at Auckland Airport rather than the flight itself. I would think very hard next time I have to fly Business Premier in New Zealand, especially on Boeing 787-9NZM, which this plane was. Basically if you are selecting seats and find that they are at a diagonal angle, do not book this if you are looking for luxurious travel. Better off with premium economy or a good economy seat. The quality of food and service indeed was way below par.

Gate agent was fantastic in Auckland. They wanted to charge me for my two bags even though I was gold member with United in Tonga. So I had to pay for an upgrade. The meals on both flights had no vegetarian option. The only one item the salad was not tasty at all. Good thing I had brought my own snacks. The bread was white roll which is so not healthy. I think New Zealand air can definitely improve their food offering.

The entire process was excellent! The economy sits are a bit snug so I'll have to be sure to purchase premier or business class next time but, other than that, food, service, attendants were exceptional. Gate agents and ticket agents too!

Can you please process refund. Mum died and dad went to Pakistan to bury her after cancelling flight.

Short flight so no entertainment, turbulence so no food service - overall flight as expected

Headphone jacks worked poorly, seat recline was broken. Planes were rundown.

Delayed and missed connection, was not re-booked like other travelers so ended up being stuck for several hours due to no one handling my booking.

American Airlines was their usual junk service — but at least it got us down to LA. I was more irritated that while they codeshare with Alaska Airlines in Seattle, they could not out our flight on one of these, opting for one of the small SkyWest operated American Eagle flights — and causing a 14 hour layover. Which I accepted due to a $2000 difference in airfare — that said it was irritating for a flight that usually would have cost around $100 extra, if that.

same as previous comments. i hate being on a plane that long. no problems w/anything else.

nothing to complain about w/the food, and professionalism of the crew. i just cant stand being on a flight for that long of a time.

Good communication regarding any updates time of flight and flight delayed. The fight was delayed by two and half hours at eleventh hour. That was unexpected, especially when you international passenger.

It was very nice. I will try to fly with Qantas whenever I can.

We lucked out. The passenger who was supposed to be in our row changed her seat, so my husband and I had 3 seats for the 2 of us. We were able to stretch out a little which made the trip much more tolerable.

Much better than I expected for such a long flight.

We paid for business class seats for the comfort that comes with that but couldn’t use the bathroom as it was full all the time.

We arrived early and finally made it to our gate almost an hour after.

The reason I don’t fly United. No in seat entertainment for a long flight and inconsistent WiFi and entertainment available from my device.

We were delayed 3x and because I didn’t purchase my tickets directly from United Airlines I was told I Have to take care of it myself so I called Underpricer and they helped me but before I changed my flights I took the risk of sticking by what my tickets were and was lucky to have gotten on the original all flight with only 15 mins before take off. not sure if I will do this again

horrible website for checking in- no option just to write the passport number; ludicrous

The planes are so dirty! Food crumbs and finger print smudges, Dust over the vents and carpet stains. It’s disgusting.

Everything good until we waited for jet bridge at SFO. Then pilot gets on speaker & said it won’t reach plane- too short, need to go to different gate. Then 5 min later, adjusted plane/jetbridge & all ok?!?

Nothing, whole flight was a nightmare, was forced to check my carryon bag at the gate, staff was rude and unprofessional

David went above and beyond to make our flight the best that it could be

Was a pain having to leave the plane and reboard but glad the plane was fixed

How badly can you screw up baggage claim? We were told to go to baggage claim too for our bags from this flight. Another flights bags were there. They finished up. More bags from a different flight arrived. Our bags did not Finally the baggage claim belt stopped working and and are flight was still listed on the arrivals for that baggage claim 2. And then nothing It turns out that they had been delivered not only the United baggage claim but far away on a Delta baggage claim No I never told us. It was only the people looking around who had been on the flight But I’m sure there was plenty of time for the employees to raffle through the bags and steal whatever they wanted
