When to visit Liberia
High tourism season is from October to January, when prices are higher and accommodation is practically fully booked.
The dry season, from December to July, brings milder temperatures. Surfers should plan their trips around May or June for a chance to catch better waves.
How to Get to Liberia
Entry requirements
Nationals from most countries will need a visa to enter Liberia, which can be easily obtained at the local embassy.
A certificate for yellow fever vaccination is mandatory.
Plane
All international flights land at the Roberts International Airport in Roberts, a city about 35 km (22 mi) from Monrovia.
Passengers should account for at least one layover in Brussels, Casablanca, or Nairobi.

Daily rates are usually high in hotels in the main cities. Most accommodations outside the big cities are eco-tourism resorts or smaller guesthouses, especially in surfing areas like Robertsport.

How to Get Around Liberia
Public Transportation
In major cities in Liberia, public transportation is a mix of taxis and "pen-pens" (motorcycle taxis).
A short-distance ride in a taxi, within the same city, costs approximately 1.00-1.50 LRD (5-7 USD).
Bus
Bush taxis are the locals' favorite mode of transportation for long distances within Liberia. They're safer and more reliable, with regular daily connections from Monrovia to Buchanan, Sanniquellie, Gbarnga, and Ganta.
What are known as buses in Liberia are actually minivans. They also travel on most of the main routes, but are far more crowded than bush taxis and not as safe.
Car
If planning to travel only within the capital city, ask the hotel to assist with car rental. They usually have their own local connections and arrange for the whole process.
For inland destinations and to travel along the coast, it's advised to rent a car with a driver and a travel guide. Some passengers prefer to arrange all this through a pre-booked all-inclusive tour.
The Cost of Living in Liberia
Both the US Dollar and the Liberian Dollar are accepted as currency in Liberia, and most prices will be listed in both of them. It's advisable to exchange money before arriving in the country. Cash is the preferred method of payment. However, ATMs are only available in the capital city. In other destinations outside Monrovia, look for a money exchange company like Western Union if low on cash. A couple of days' worth of groceries can cost approximately 4,227 LRD (20 USD) and a cheap meal at a restaurant is about 2,113 LRD (10 USD).
