The Trans-Canada Highway connects St. John's to other cities and towns around Newfoundland and, although the highway is in great condition, you will likely encounter sharp curves while driving through these hills. Driving in St. John's was relatively easy. Seems everything is within 15 - 20 minutes. Parking signs are a little confusing. Be careful to find out if street cleaning is happening on the street you park. There are no signs for that and no forgiveness. Ensure your car rental return coincides with your departure flight time.

Initially when renting the car things were good. I got a pretty well new ride. The papers I received with damage etc gave no indication of any damage to said car. We were informed that because I declined insurance any damage was my problem. So a few days into my visit as I was walking towards car I noticed a dent in rear trunk area. Not noticed before or declared. I was upset someone struck the car and left. My heart sunk. I called my insurance company in BC and got the info I needed for claims. I took said car into Healys autorepair for an estimate. I returned car and admitted to the dent. Young fella took info but after discussion the lady attending went through her phone and admitted the ding was there already. I was relieved but afterwards thought you could do better. If not for her honesty would i have been charged??For Several days this weighed heavy on me. Debra Martens

The frond desk employees were not a pleasure to deal with. The person who handled the pick-up was distracted and when I ask for clarification on something, he was arrogant and dismissive. When we had a problem during our trip, the employee who answered the phone showed no compassion or interest in our situation and did not handle the situation professionally. He even gave very unsound advice. I ended up contacting the manager who thankfully was very supportive, listened to our concerns and was overall exceptional in her customer service! Unfortunately, the front desk people are the first and last interactions that customers have. I will probably not rent with Thrifty again.

After spending 1 hr on the phone with a Thrifty representative the day prior to my car pickup to advise that my flight was delayed, I was told on arrival that my reservation had been cancelled because I hadn’t arrived on time. Thrifty was unsure that they could find me a car. After all other customers had been cared for they addressed my issue and found a car. The car they gave me hadn’t been cleaned. I had booked the car months in advance and had prepaid for it. Totally outrageous service.

They were extremely pleasant and friendly the car was a great vehicle for the price just a little awkward to get in and out of because I have a bad knee however the car was very clean and great on gas and very comfortable once I got in. Only wish you didn’t have to walk so far to get your car when you get off the plane other then that I would absolutely highly recommend budget to others looking for a great experience for a rental

I made the mistake of booking at a location that wasn’t at the airport. Cost us $35 for a taxi. Due to Covid they wouldn’t pick us up. That’s lame. Shuttles run. They would have gotten 5 stars otherwise.

Ok the Kayak reservation site, I selected the pickup time of 12:00 on a Saturday. The location closes at 12:00!! By complete luck, I saw their hours on their web site that morning and called them around 11:40. They agreed to wait for me until around 12:15. Another couple came in behind me (they also selected 12:00 pickup time), so they were lucky that I had called ahead and they benefited from my call. Otherwise the branch would have closed and pick up would not have been available until Tuesday… due to Monday being a Thanksgiving holiday. Takeaway message: The proposed pickup times on Kayak’s site are not synced with the agencies and cannot be completely trusted.

The pickup was not smooth. No cars were available and they had only a large pick up truck and had to return later that evening. Took over an hour to get a vehicle (long wait) and the only saving grace was the counter staff as they were great but clearly overwhelmed with the lack of availability.

We had booked an SUV and only cars were available when we got there. One of the pieces of luggage had to ride in the backseat everytime we changed locations. They said they upgraded us to a “full sized” car, because the SUV wasn’t available. Staff was as helpful as possible working with what they had.
