Top tips for hiring a car in Halkidiki

  • If you’re looking to hire a car in Halkidiki, make sure you check what documentation you require to finalise your rental agreement. In Greece, you will need a valid driving licence as well as an International Driving Permit, which you can apply for at your local post office back in the UK. Furthermore, you must keep all your documents handy whilst you’re driving, including the rental agreement. This is because traffic police may be inclined to stop you at any time, and they will need to look over your documents.
  • Once you’re on the road, try to get familiarised with the local rules. Remember, you must drive on the right-hand side of the road and wearing a seatbelt is mandatory. If you are stopped by the police and a passenger is not wearing a seatbelt, you can be fined around 350 € (£300) and have your licence revoked for 10 days. If you’re travelling with children under the age of 10, they mustn’t travel in the front passenger seat, and any child between 3-11 years and under the height of 1.35 m must be seated in a child seat.
  • It is permitted in Greece to enter other countries within the EU if you want to cross borders with your hire car; however, you will need to check with your car hire company. Depending on their policy, crossing borders can be free, completely forbidden, conditional (you will need to buy additional insurance, for instance) or you will need to pay a cross-borders fee. When booking, we recommend you make the hire company aware that you would like to cross a border with the vehicle; they can then advise you on your options.

FAQs about hiring a car in Halkidiki

  • Should I hire a car in Halkidiki?

This unique region in northern Greece is well known for its protruding, claw-like peninsulas, which include beautiful forests and stunning sandy coves. These gems are hidden away from the various areas that the public buses can get to, so it’s a huge advantage hiring a car and getting to all the far reaches of this idyllic region. Though the public transportation system is decent, hiring a car is one of the best options, especially if you’re short on time. Furthermore, areas like Kassandreia, the most developed part of Halkidiki, is only around a 50min drive from Thessaloniki Airport "Makedonia" (SKG), where you can hire various vehicles that are perfect for a summer road trip. Sithonia, the central peninsula, is a little quieter and more difficult to get to, but equally stunning.

  • What is driving like in Halkidiki?

Driving in Halkidiki can be an interesting experience, in that a lot of local drivers have different driving habits to drivers in the UK. Here, the car horn can be used at any moment, but it’s important to clarify that this is not necessarily a sign of frustration or that you are driving badly, but it’s something to keep in mind. It does have its plus points too, in that there are very few restrictions in place when it comes to parking; you can park your vehicle in most places, if it’s safe of course. Many petrol stations also have attendants who fill up your car for you, but be mindful that petrol stations in rural areas usually close around 19:00. Halkidiki’s roads are generally in excellent condition; from Thessaloniki, the main road has two lanes, and around Kassandreia and Sithonia, they are smaller but still simple to navigate. As with anywhere, be mindful of the speed limits, with rural roads being 56 mph; expressways, 68 mph; and motorways, 81 mph.

  • How old do you have to be to hire a car in Halkidiki?

If you want to hire a car in Halkidiki, you must be at least 21 years old and have carried your driving licence for at least one year. However, many car hire companies require drivers to be at least 23 years old, so when you’re booking your car online, make sure to check the company’s policy. Furthermore, you may be charged an additional ‘young driver’ surcharge if you’re under the age of 25; this is very common amongst car hire companies.
