Africa World Airlines, commonly referred to as AWA, connects Ghana to a host of countries within the West African region. Flights are controlled from a central hub in Accra and reach Nigeria, Liberia, Sierra Leone. The Balafon Travel Awards crowned it the Best Airline in West Africa in 2019, highlighting its ability to provide a safe and reliable service.
It is owned by the Chinese holding company HNA Group, which also controls carriers such as Hainan Airlines, Beijing Capital Airlines, Tianjin Airlines and Suparna Airlines. The first Embraer jets flown by the carrier were procured from these affiliated HNA Group airlines. An interline partnership is maintained with Emirates that increases the possibilities of connections to the Middle East. A codeshare agreement is held with South African Airlines, extending a network of services to include African countries, such as Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Namibia and Angola.
Economy is the only fare class available on AWA flights. The cabins are configured in a 2 x 1 layout with a singular aisle down the middle. Seats are allocated on the day of the flight at the airport. If you would prefer an isolated seat in the single-seat row, it is recommended that you arrive early.
The fleet is made up entirely of Embraer aircraft. Able to hold 50 passengers, the ERJ-145 model is the most commonly flown. The twin-engine jets are designed for short-to-medium distance flights and suit the intracontinental routes operated by AWA. The colors of the Ghanaian flag (green, yellow and red) are proudly featured on the tail of the aircraft.
